Priorities ~ Wall Street Journal

A couple days ago I was asked to read the quote I have included above by my English teacher. The first thing I noticed about this quote was that it is not just some "cheesy" inspirational quote you would hear on a weekly basis; this quote is meant to make you think deep and maybe even re-evaluate yourself. What this quote wants to remind you is that everything in your life, including time, is a choice. Even at my age I have heard the phrase "I don't have time" probably more than I could count. Most of the time this is just an excuse not to do something you don't want to. When that phrase is changed to "it's not a priority" it is easier to differentiate whether or not this is a logical excuse.
If you don't want to do something (usually something unnecessary), such as ironing your sheets, it is not very important; so the phrase "it's not a priority" is an exceptable reason. When someone is speaking of something more serious, such as taking care of their own health, it's often easier to say "I don't have time." However if you change the language you use then it will cause you to realize that saying you "don't have time to go to the doctor" is an equivalent to saying "My health is not a priority." Hearing a task that is important to complete paired with the phrase "it's not a priority" might make you change your mind about failing to complete the task.
We as people, no matter our age, need to remember we are in control of how we spend our time. If something is important or a necessity you will make time to prioritize that task. We need to stop making excuses for not getting things done when we actually do have the time. We have lost the sense of control over our lives. We need to step up and take that control back. Let's start living and spending time the way we want to.
