Today is National School Walkout Day! Students across the country walked out of their classes at 10:00 A.M. to protest in whatever way they chose. I, as well as two other students, organized and planned our schools walkout. We got the permission of our school administrators to assure that no students that wanted to participate would get in trouble for leaving class. This also allowed us to have teachers and a couple of police officers watch over the protest. Our walkout met in the school’s auditorium. For our demonstration we created a slideshow of all 17 victims of the Parkland school shooting; giving one minute for each student. I was honestly amazed that so many students participated and stayed quiet and respectful for all 17 minutes of the presentation. Many of today’s protests were focused on gun control, but that was not our goal. Our goal was to honor the victims of Parkland and to bring attention to the safety of our schools.
