13 Reasons Why: Season 2

The second season of 13 Reasons Why came out yesterday and I already finished watching it. This season was so good. I’ll try not to spoil anything but I am going to go into some detail; so if you haven’t watched yet and do not want to know what will happen I suggest you don’t read any further. Many people judge the show itself for being graphic, triggering, or inaccurate. I think that the show is  a great way to talk about real issues that often aren’t addressed in the media. Yes the show is graphic but it is that way in order to display the real pain and suffering people go through.
I understand that the episodes may be triggering to people that struggle with depression, ptsd, and other metal health issues. However, the people at the show understand that too. This season, every episode started off with a trigger warning. Every episode also ended with a member of the cast reminding viewers that if they ever need help they can reach out or go to their websit <https://13reasonswhy.info/> for help. The website offers resources for people to reach out for help and to educate people about issues and how to start conversations.
I also understand that some people may find the show inaccurate. The problem with this is that not everyone’s experiences with things like assaults and depression are the same. Because of this, the experiences shown throughout the show may not be similar to someone’s personal experiences. This also creates the option that the experience on the show may be very similar to someone’s personal experiences so it is important to be aware of the things watching the show could trigger.
One thing people are talking about this season is an graphic sexual assault scene in the last episode. In the episode a group of bullies physically assault a kid in the bathroom before sexually assaulting him with a mop handle. Many people believe this scene crossed a line. However, this scene is representative of every male that has ever been sexually assaulted. Men are often left behind when it comes to sexual assault. Women are still struggling with being believed and not judged as victims. The same goes for men but often people act like sexual assault is a one way street. This is completely untrue. Statistics say that around 1-6 makes are sexually abused or assaulted.
This show is a way to address the real issues like sexual assault and suicide that are often not addressed in the media. The show is important to represent everyone who has had simulated experiences. While I know not everyone will agree with me this is completely my opinion. I hope everyone that is struggling with assault, depression, or any other mental illness has the strength to reach out for help. You all deserve better than the situations you have been placed in.
